Story
Our client, a startup CEO located in Texas USA, is a seasoned engineer with a decade of experience crafting mechanical joining solutions for industry giants like Ford and Caterpillar.
Working with various vehicle types and providing fasteners for automotive products, he identified two major issues:
1. Missing Pieces in Engineering Education: Many engineering programs don’t cover essential assembly elements like fasteners, glues, welds, and torqued joints, leading to costly mistakes.
2. Inefficient PLM Tool Use: Engineers often can’t effectively use their PLM tools to find parts, causing unnecessary vendor calls and high obsolescence costs.
Our client engaged us to design an innovative digital tool that bridges these gaps. This tool would connect all parts within a system to their specific usage details, including who used them, when, and how. A digital knowledge base of past designs, allowing engineers to easily discover proven solutions and costly one-offs. All this knowledge would be stored in one centralized location, readily accessible for future teams.
Varyence helped design a digital expert to assist designers in navigating the parts list, preventing potential mistakes and duplication that could cost millions on every new project. In this era of rapid EV program launches, this solution ensures efficiency and accuracy in design and assembly.
Additionally, we redesigned the public marketing website, created new brand identify, a new social media brand kit, designed a pitch deck, and created a professional marketing video for brand promotion.
Varyence continues to work with this client, releasing new updates and versions to ensure the products ongoing effectiveness.
Customer Challenge
- Design a user-friendly digital PLM platform for searching the best engineering solutions for assembly elements like fasteners, glues, welds, and torqued joints.
- Enable the saving of all types of designs and EV assemblies to create a digital assembly library for teaching future teams.
- Incorporate existing designs and CAD prints into each design solution.
- Allow engineers to easily find the right parts within the digital PLM system, reducing unnecessary communication with vendors.
- Redesign the public marketing website to make it look professional and modern.
- Prepare a social media kit to improve branding on socials.
- Prepare professionally looking pitch deck design to attract new partners and investors.
- Design and produce a one-minute marketing video describing the benefits of the digital design expert PLM tools.
Design Journey
Below is the UX design journey we took on this project to create this digital engineering PLM platform.
Depending on the size and budget, we would perform these similar steps on most design engagements.
User research and analysis
- In collaboration with customer, we talked to real clients, engineers, designers, partners and key stakeholders to understand their needs and experiences.
- Analyzed data to see how people use similar PLM tools.
- Identified areas where users struggle or have pain points.
User journey mapping
- Created a visual map illustrating user interactions with our PLM digital platform.
- Pinpointed potential trouble spots where users might encounter obstacles or experience frustration.
- Enhanced the user experience within those problematic areas.
Information Architecture and Content
- Organized content to help users find what they need easily.
- Ensure content aligns with users’ needs and goals.
- Crafted the information architecture.
wireframing
- Create simple designs to test and improve the user experience.
- Iterated versions based upon feedback from users.
Wireframes
Brand style guide
- Developed a visual style and design system that aligns with the brand & user experience.
Style Guide
high-fidelity design and clickable Prototype
- Developed interactive prototypes to see how users interact with the design.
- Test and validate the design with real users.
Results
Engineers and designers can view the entire assembly, including all parts, in one digital PLM tool.
All assembly designs are saved in one place, providing the opportunity to learn from previous designs.
Using pictures and the digital knowledge base, designers can easily find common solutions and avoid costly one-offs. The digital PLM tool eliminates clunky PLM searches, allowing DREs to review current parts instead of contacting a vendor or distributor.
Check all details of the chosen assembly option, monitor costs and savings from selected fasteners, parts, screws, and other components, and receive recommendations.
The newly redesigned website attracts new clients and effectively communicates the benefits and details of our solutions.
